Costa Rica: Green Season or Dry Season

If you’re planning a trip to Costa Rica, it may seem strange to you to plan beyond Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring. However, if you want to experience the tropics you must consider our two seasons: The Dry Season and the Rainy Season.

Generally, the dry season, considered summer by Costa Ricans, is from mid-November to April. The rainy season(or “green season”) is from May to mid-November in most of the country, with notable exceptions on the Caribbean coast. Costa Ricans call this wet time of year their “winter”. So what does this exactly mean? Basically, if you want clear summer skies you might want to consider the dry season. However be ready for a lot of heat; up to 95°F (35°C), and probably some (or a lot) of dusty roads… along with dry brownish flora along the coastline and mountain ranges. But it’s not all dull… most floral trees in Costa Rica blossom during the dry season, providing a multi colored spectacle of magical trees. The dry season is also high season in Costa Rica, as many vacationers (local and International) doze off to the coast to enjoy the marvelous beaches and sunny skies that the country has to offer. This might mean higher prices in hospitality and in some tours.

If high heat is not for you, and you want to experience a green, lush and tropical scenery, the rainy season might be what you’re aiming for. Prices also tend to drop in most hotels and some adventure tours during the Green Season, as it is a less transited season. This also means less crowds in the favorite touristic destinations.

However, be ready for a lot of humidity, strong rainfall, and depending on your traveling plan, some over flooded rivers and (yes) bridges. With the rain, comes abundance of life. Many animals enjoy this vital season and sightings of insects, birds and mammals are more common.

What about Sensoria? Sensoria has a very peculiar location. Though our closest access is through dry pacific Guanacaste, we are located on the Caribbean Slope. This means we do not have a particularly defined Dry Season and Rainy Season. We get constant rainfall during 9 out of 12 months, and a brief intermittent Dry Season occurring between September and October, and in April. Sitting at an altitude of approximately 1500masl, Sensoria lies on transitioning altitude rainforest, and benefits from abundant precipitation, with intermittent sunshine throughout the year.

So if you’re looking for both, a sunny and a rainy experience, Sensoria may offer them both. You can plan your vacation to Guanacaste’s sunny Gold Coast during the Dry Season, and enjoy some majestic rainfall and lush rainforest in Sensoria. Or you can plan a mystic trip during the Green Season, and enjoy some sunny days along our rainforest trails.
