TIPS FOR HAVING A GREAT AND SAFE VACATION

IN COSTA RICA

TIPS FOR HAVING A GREAT AND SAFE VACATION IN COSTA RICA

Knowing what to expect and taking precautions will give you a better chance to enjoy your holiday and go home with a very positive experience, which in fact and of course most people do!

Tips for a safe and pleasant trip:

  • Never leave your belongings unattended in public areas, buses or taxis.
  • Always take care of your belongings.
  • You mean to help! contact charity organizations
  • Beware of pickpockets
  • Keep your valuables in the safety deposit box of your hotel.
  • Don’t accept help from strangers if you get a flat tire. Seek for assistance from the police or your car rental.
  • If you plan on traveling to areas far from your hotel, you must carry your passport and be cautious. If, on the other hand, you stay within close range of your hotel, it is advisable to keep your documents in a safe box and carry a copy of your passport with all the relevant information. Use the safe deposit box of your hotel for your valuables.
  • Don’t leave unattended your possessions whenever you are in a public area (hotel lobby, transport, airports, restaurants etc).
  • Ask for information at the front desk of your hotel about the safest routes and means of transportation, especially during nightime.
  • When using taxi services, verify that they comply with the legal established requirements, such as yellow triangles printed on the doors and a meter.
  • Exchange money currency only at banks and approved change offices. Bank transactions require a passport (not copy).
  • Use ATMs that are located in public, well illuminated areas. Don’t allow strangers to stand near you and avoid taking unsolicited help. Count your money and put it away prior leaving the ATM.
  • If you need to check a map, do so in a public and secure area or ask a police officer for help. Do not stop in front of strangers.
  • Keep car windows closed and doors locked when traveling and parking. Do not leave items in your car.
  • If you get a flat tire, or someone tells you something is wrong with your car, you are bumped from behind or you are being followed, do not stop. Seek police assistance or drive to a busy shopping center.
  • Costa Rica protects its children and adolescents. Sexual exploitation of minors is a crime punished by law.
  • There are countries that make it easier for those that exploit minors to be prosecuted in their native country
  • In Costa Rica, a person from 18 years old is considered an adult.

FOR THE ROAD

  • While driving or parking your car, lock the doors and keep the windows closed.
  • If you get a flat tire, or someone tells you something is wrong with your car, you are bumped from behind or you are being followed, do not stop. Seek police assistance or drive to a busy shopping center.
  • Avoid stopping when a stranger asks you for a ride.
  • If you need to check a map, do so in a public and secure area or ask a police officer for help. Do not stop in front of strangers.
  • Traffic infractions are to be paid at banks, never directly to police officials.
  • If you travel to areas far from your hotel, you must carry your passport and be cautious. If you stay within close range of your hotel, keep your documents in a safe box and carry a copy of your passport with all the relevant information.
